The manuscripts contain notes, research material, drafts, outlines, typescripts, and galleys of several of Downes' major published and unpublished works including The Eternal Spring of Music, Treasury of American Song, Men of MusicTen Operatic MasterpiecesChopin, and Olin Downes on Music, a compilation of Downes' writings from 1906-1955 edited by Irene Downes. The series also contains materials for a memoir of Downes.

The Personal and Family papers consist of personal papers of the Downes and Miles families from 1908-1962. Includes family correspondence, financial records (1916-1962), newspaper clippings, notebooks and engagement books, and some personal effects such as gloves. The bulk of the series is comprised of the family correspondence of Olin Downes (1906-1955), his wife Irene Miles Downes (1936-1946), his mother Louise Courson Downes (1908-1940), his sisters Dorothy Downes Culthe (1909-1956) and Frances Downes Behre (1911-1962), and his daughter Nancy Downes Smith (1922-1955). Also includes correspondence between Irene Miles Downes and her mother Laura M. Miles and her brothers and sisters.

The collection consists of correspondence, printed material, writings, photographs and a typewriter. The correspondence is mainly from readers of his columns and editorials and its often from Florida Congressmen. The bulk of the collection is printed material which relates to his work at Florida Times-Union in Jackson, Florida. There are scrapbooks filled with clippings of his editorials. There are also clippings of his music reviews (preservation copies have been made of these). Issues of Pathfinder, University Items, and The States' Righter are included.

The Sheet and Manuscript Music consist of published sheet music and music manuscripts collected by Olin Downes from approximately 1900-1946. The manuscripts include proofs; advance copies; and printed music of symphonic scores, operatic scores, sheet music for piano; and original handwritten manuscripts of songs by Georgia Gossler (most of which can be found in box 1). Many of the items were printed outside of the United States; Russian and Finnish music are highlighted.

The Correspondence consists of correspondence of Olin Downes from approximately 1909-1955. Correspondence is professional in nature and contains both incoming letters to Downes and copies of his outgoing letters documenting Downes' career as a music critic and lecturer as well as his involvement with such organizations as the Berlioz Society, the Bohemian Club (N.Y.), the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, Columbia Artists Management, Metropolitan Opera Company, National Council of American-Soviet Friendship, National Council for the Arts, Sciences, and Professions, the New York Times, Rachmaninoff Fund, and the World's Fair of 1939. Major correspondents include Richard Aldrich, Ernest Bloch, Alec Hammerslough, Charles Hubbard, Serge Koussevitsky, Stuart Montgomery, Kenneth Murray, Walter Naumburg, and Henry A. Wallace.

The scrapbooks and folios mainly contain newspaper articles and reviews written by Olin Downes from 1909-1955 (with gaps) for the New York Times pertaining to musical performers and performances at Carnegie Hall, the New York Metropolitan Opera, and the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Other scrapbooks and folios include newspaper clippings of the writings of music critics Virgil Thompson (1940-1954, with gaps) and Ernest Newman (1935-1954).

The Lectures consist of lectures of Olin Downes from 1932-1953. Lectures include handwritten manuscripts, typed drafts with corrections, and final copies. The lectures document Downes' knowledge in the field of music and discuss various composers; types of music including classical, folk songs, blues, and opera; music and society; music history and theory; and music interpretation. Many of the lectures were produced for the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences lecture series, broadcasts for the CBS Music Hour, or for speeches and talks for various societies and musical organizations.
